Highline Hammer Prep

I’m getting everything in order for the trip to Whitefish; it’s a long list of things to pack, but a short list of actuals for a five day biking trip. What I mean by that is lots of bike stuff and very little personal stuff. I can get by with t-shirts, underwear, a cap, two pairs of shorts, shaver, toothbrush, sandles, maybe hiking boots, wind breaker, palm pilot, maybe a laptop with power cord, earphones, mp3 player, train ticket, cell phone with charger, id, credit card, twenty dollar bill, massage oil, “the stick” … sunscreen, q-tips, comb, big knife, small knife, backpack, some vitamins, pack a dinner.

I’m more worried about packing the bike. It’s the first time travelling with it so I’m mindful of the setup. Let’s see. Travel Case, allen wrenches, screwdriver, CO2, tube, tire, frame pump, pedal remover, water bottles, fork spreaders (for the case), helmet, cleats, socks, lube, rags, maybe a cassette tool with chain whip, bar tape, electrical tape, maybe a bulldog cable lock … bibs, jerseys, arms warmers, leg warmers, underarmour, garmin with charger, hr strap.

The trip on the train looks to be pretty good. I depart Portland on Wednesday at 4:45 PM, so once I get settled in the sleeper car I’ll eat a sandwich, read and pretty much go to bed when it gets dark .. to awaken in Whitefish Thursday morning around 7:30. Hammer Nutrition will pick me up and take me and who ever else arrived by Amtrak to the hotel where I’ll build the bike, put new bar tape (white this time) and maybe spin around town.

The meet and greet will be later that evening, I think at a pizza place. Sounds good to me!

The riding itinery will be Friday’s two hour spin, Saturday’s 136 mile 8,000 ft of climbing, and Sunday’s 80′ish mile lake ride. While I’m looking forward to the riding and comraderie, Friday’s “fueling school” will be an eye opener I think. I’d like to know that I’m using all the powders and gels efficently. I think I am but it’s worth asking a couple questions about proper recovery. I usually drink a glass with two scoops of Recoverite, then eat a meal after workout. I’m interested to see what some of the other athletes do after hard training rides and how they approach their rest days.
