Training # 24 - June’s LTHR

In February, I rode this course to figure out my lactic threshold heart rate; the poor man’s test to see what your average heartrate is when you reach LT. A lab test would be $75.00 here in Portland. Not a bad price, but I’m really just trying to find baselines to work from.

I went so fast I ran out of road! HA. HA. No really. Instead of a 20 minute TT, it ended up being 18.5 minutes. I figure I can deal without the last minute and a half of stats. My LTHR actually went up a little from 168 to 170. I’m not an expert, but having that higher will yield me faster times before wearing out from the lactic acid in my legs. I guess. I think I should be a man and deal with the pain over the course of a time trial.

More important than postering while I’m racing, though, this gives me a proper baseline in which to base my weekday workouts. If I’m doing Steady State training, I know to keep my HR below the 170 to benefit the most.

My average speed also increased from 17.3 to 20.3 mph. Awesome. Awesome. A-A-A-Awesome. This means all that hard work I’ve been doing is paying off. I can feel it too. I can go longer, faster than a couple months ago. I’m stoked. Three miles an hour may not seem like a lot, but look at it this way. If I went back in time and raced myself on the same course, my June Self would be waiting at the end almost a minute and a half for my February Self to finish! Or 0.44 miles behind. Count to ninety. Long time, huh?

HR vs. Speed on 20 minute time trial.
