Training # 14 - Active Recovery
We’re finishing up our vacationing in Orlando this week. I’ll say that while I haven’t put in any cycling miles, I have been to the gym to keep up some level of fitness. And we’ve walked miles. Everyday. There’s so much to do and see at Walt Disney World all spread out over thousands of square miles that walking the small portions this week netted some serious hours on our feet. Serious hours. There’s four theme parks and two water parks. We saw ‘em all.
It’s like a holiday at all the parks. Everyday. Everywhere. Everyone is happy. Like you’re not allowed to be anything other that just plain happy, forgiving and content. At Epcot, beautiful fireworks fill the sky every evening. Not Piccolo Pete’s and Roman Candles either. It’s the full-on barge catching on fire lighting up the sky with pyro; big, booming, banging fireworks. Once you leave the grounds, you’re back in the real world of course. Folks can’t drive, are rude, weird. But while you’re on the grounds, it’s pretty amazing. People are nice. Always.
Best ride: The Summit Plummet at Blizzard Beach. 120 feet high and it’s the tallest water slide in America. No that’s not me in the picture, but I wanted you to get the idea. It’s quite freaky actually. Once reaching the top of the climb, you’re watching the guy in front of you just disappear down this chute and you’re next. You’re supposed to lock your ankles together and cross your arms to your chest. Staying in this form was all I was thinking as I scooted off the edge. It seemed for a whole two seconds everything went silent and my breath was taken away. I squinted, not wanting to shut my eyes completely but I still couldn’t really see anything. Split seconds later the huge rush of sound followed me down the chute, I took a deep breathe and held it all the way to the bottom; slowing and thinking to myself, “Wow”.
“What was my speed?” I asked the guy as I got off.
“60 mph,” he said.
Geez. I was stoked. Amazed. I wanted to try to get more aero and see if I could “beat” my time. Alas, there’s much ground to cover and I didn’t get to try that out. Maybe next time.

They have the best chocolate chip cookies there! Did you try to make it over to Universal Studios?

Universal. Did not make it there. Too bad!! There’s way too much to do there. You need a month to see it all!
